Archery

Many years ago, soldiers skilled in archery protected the King of Scotland. Although there is no longer a King of Scotland to protect, this ancient sport is extremely popular with people of all ages and abilities, no matter what their physical limitations might be. Many of the hotels offer archery and all the equipment needed for the beginner is supplied. Senior travelers who may be interested should visit the Scottish Highlands, which is supposedly one of the best places for archery. The different types of archery are bow hunting or target archery and both are equally popular. Picture yourself and your senior travel group enjoying the accomplishment of aiming and hitting your targets.

Whiskey Distilleries

Scotland is the capital of whiskey! They consider whiskey to be a treasure and the standards are very stringent regarding fermentation, distillation and purity. These strict rules are for the protection of the100+ distilleries and for safeguarding the integrity of Scotch Whiskey. Visiting the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society near Edinburgh is recommended if you want to sample some of the best and enjoy viewing the casks as you are sipping your whiskey.Take a stroll through Scotland’s countryside and enjoy its landscape or spend a day in lively Glasgow shopping or viewing the magnificent Victorian architecture. Whether you are traveling as a single senior traveler or in a senior travel group the opportunity for seniors to experience Scotland is unlimited.

Scottish Castles

At one time there were over 3,000 castles in Scotland. Many have disappeared and others are in ruins but numerous castles are still available for the interested elderly traveler to visit and enjoy. Built as strongholds by their inhabitants to protect themselves from invading enemies, today many of them provide luxurious accommodation to their elderly visitors.

Bird watching

One of the UK’s rarest breeding birds, the hen harrier can be viewed a short 20 minute train ride from Glasgow at the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. The 50+ National Nature Reserves are excellent places for the senior travel person to view the many birds of this area. Countless elderly travelers are amongst the 70,000 people who visit the reserves each year.

Fishing

For the older adult who loves the outdoors and real wild fishing this is the place to be. The salmon, trout, charr or coarse fish are plentiful and of excellent quality. Fly fishing lessons and Spey casting courses are available for seniors at every level of skill. Special guided fishing tours can be arranged for the single senior travel person or senior travel club.
