Senior Living
Hello, everyone. This is the first of my communications with you about senior living, and I hope you will enjoy them. Perhaps they will fill a need for you and be of interest and some information. Having said that, I just returned from a trip with my good friend Betty. We enjoyed it very much, and, as typical these days, it was a bargain indeed. We went by air to Las Vegas for three days, flew to San Diego, boarded the Holland-America ship “Statendam” for a four day sail home to Vancouver, Canada. All for the total price of $899 (Canadian funds, all taxes included!) This was for an outside cabin, and our itinerary included a visit to Santa Catalina Island, which was new to me. It was a very interesting resort area with lots of various things to do, I found the golf carts for hire both practical and fascinating zipping along the roads.
A word about Betty. We have been friends for 65 years, having done “shows” together many times . Betty and her husband Terry worked on the old C.P.R. ship “Princess Patricia” on the Alaska run during the summer months. Their involvement lasted 10 years, Terry as singer and entertainer, and Betty playing the piano and organ. They always worked together and were well- known in the Vancouver area. I used to “sub” for them when they needed a trip off, with my accordion. Fond memories, indeed. I am afraid the talk about Las Vegas and the recession are quite true. It was strange to see rows of unoccupied seats in front of the slot machines. I will say, Las Vegas people are fighters and I have full confidence in their recovery. Also good to see the Vancouver Canucks third- string favorites with a 7/2 betting odds. I am a “travel-bug” indeed, having taken many trips sometimes alone, and less seldom, with a travel companion. I have always gone in a group however, I don’t like the idea of disappearing and nobody misses me. Perhaps some time I will tell you about my more-ambitious trips to Africa, China and Russia, etc. I have loved them all, met great companions, and learned a lot. Of late, I am afraid my travels are limited to this continent, mainly because of money (that old necessity) and my age. I will be 84 on my next birthday in June, and although I feel able, my travel insurance takes a bite out of my savings.
I am looking forward to my next trip to the Accordion Convention in October in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am a retired professional accordion player of some note, and have played since I was 11 years old. The Accordion Convention is really well-run, they have guest accordionists from Europe and elsewhere, workshops with the “names” and lots of camaraderie with the celebrities. The convention is for four busy days, including lunch and dinner every day, with a concert every evening. It is held at the Gold Coast Hotel, who offer rooms to conventioneers at $56.00 per night. A bargain indeed! If you are interested, you can get more information from the event organizer Paul Pasquali, 1760 South 450 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115 Until my next communicates with you, take care, good health and most of all, be happy! June.
