Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) for the senior male can be heartbreaking. Depression and severe low self esteem is often the result of impotence in older adult men. So it is understandable that they jump at the chance of taking a pill that may re-establish their sexual activity.

First, it should be known what the reason or cause for the erectile dysfunction is before taking a medication that can and does have side-effects. A man’s lifestyle can be the cause of the dysfunction as well as surgery, an injury, current medication or psychological factors. Commonly, ED in senior males is caused by other medical conditions or diseases such as diabetes, alcoholism, vascular disease, kidney disease or low testosterone.

According to some health expert’s, diabetes is the cause of 35 to 50 percent of erectile dysfunction for men in their senior years. Stress, fear of sexual failure and guilt can cause erectile dysfunction but also be a side-effect of the problem.

Once we determine the cause it is much easier to know what medication can or should be taken to alleviate the impotence in the senior male to reduce the chance of complicating the condition.

One of the more well known and most prescribed drugs is Viagra, which has helped thousands of senior males with erectile dysfunction problems. Erectile-Dysfunction-Senior-Men-02

But it should be established firstly that they are healthy enough to be active sexually and do not suffer from chest pain or other discomforts. Medication that contains nitrates can cause a sudden unsafe drop in blood pressure so Viagra should be avoided for men in their senior years that require nitrate related medication.

There are other safe medications such as Cialis and Levitra that have been approved to treat impotence in older adult men. A doctor will decide the appropriate dosage and will want to be notified if there are any side-effects. For the more elderly male suffering from ED many physicians prescribe a lower dosage and limit the number of pills taken during a certain time period.

Some of the more common side-effects can be an upset stomach, headaches, and a flushed face. Some elderly men also experience blurred vision, sensitivity to light, diarrhea, bladder pain, dizziness and leg cramping while taking these erectile dysfunction medications. Some of the more rare side-effects are eye problems such as bleeding, burning or swelling, seizures, and anxiety.

With consultation and guidance from their doctor, hundreds of thousands of men have re-established a healthy lifestyle and, when closely monitored, do not suffer any of the more severe side-effects. When one type of medication does not work, switching to another brand can sometimes produce positive results.

Don’t despair or be silent if you are one of the thousands of older adult men who have an impotence problem, but do be careful. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a treatment that will work for you.
