British Columbia can be educational for seniors
Rugged scenery, bountiful wildlife, a diversified culture and studies in art ~ British Columbia can be educational for seniors. Whether you stay in Vancouver, visit Vancouver Island or travel into the interior of the province there is unlimited potential for the senior traveler to experience history, agriculture, rugged forests, semi-deserts, wildlife, marine biology and a diversified way of life.
The history of the province includes those determined prospectors seeking the illusive gold in the Cariboo and silver in the Kootenays. Searching for the famous gold rush trail is still possible by any elderly traveler who has a guidebook that is easy to follow. Rail travel is still important in today’s economy but for those elderly persons who are interested in trains they will be fascinated by the stories of human drama that took place during the building of the railway; Adventuresome, as well as educational for seniors.
British Columbia’s environmental education programs can be anything from coyote mentoring, learning survival skills, to experiencing simple movement activities leading to a deeper understanding of the natural world. For the more venturesome senior there are even wolf tracking courses available or bird sound interpretation programs to enjoy. Birding or learning about birds is possible anywhere in the province with many programs available for all ages. The bald eagle, Canadian geese, harry woodpeckers, mountain chickadees and the sharp-shinned hawk are just a few to study and see.
While touring Vancouver Island it won’t be a proper trip unless you take advantage of the many tours available for whale watching or studying marine life in the waters that surround the island.
If wildlife or outdoor activities don’t interest you, then check out the many opportunities available in the city Vancouver. Drawing, oil painting and bookmaking are taught at the Emily Carr Institute of Art. They offer many one week or short term classes for the beginner or experienced. For those seniors who love to write the University of British Columbia offers classes in creative writing, article writing, novel and fiction writing.
You could even learn how to write your memoirs.It really doesn’t matter what the older adult is interested in there is something for everyone to study while visiting this beautiful province on Canada’s west coast.
