Activities for Seniors

activities-for-seniors-001 If you’re looking for a few fun activities for seniors, you may not have to look for long. Many communities offer activity centers with specific classes for seniors—and if not, these same community centers likely provide senior discounts for older adults who are interested in available programming.

If you want to pick up a new hobby, polish a skill you already have, or meet other people in your community, these activities are an excellent way to accomplish those goals. And if the “activities for seniors” selections at your local level are lacking, think about fixing that yourself and starting a new group for older adults.

Here are some ideas to get you started with fun activities for seniors:

1. Volunteer.
The world can always use a few more do-gooders, and volunteering is a wonderful way to spend post-retirement free time. It’s most often fun, easy, and very flexible—you can donate whatever amount of time works for you, big or small, and do it on your schedule. If you lack fulfillment in other areas of your life or are searching for something that feels worthwhile, volunteering may be what you’re seeking. Knowing that you’re making a difference—no matter how small—and helping others is a huge boost, and others will truly appreciate your commitment.

2. Play community sports.
Be active! Even if you can’t run, pitch a fastball, or slice a serve in the same way that you used to, sports are some of the best activities for seniors out there, and regular exercise is essential for keeping older adults’ bodies healthy and in top shape. Besides, your experience counts for a lot! Try signing up for a community-sports league or an intramural team. You might be outnumbered by young people, but a diverse team is good for everyone, and weekly practices will give you the opportunity to meet a lot of fun new people.

3. Start a book club.
Love to read? Share your hobby by setting up a book club in your community. It can be themed or very loosely structured—whatever appeals to you most. Feel free to invite other seniors or anyone who wants to come. You can put up fliers in your neighborhood and ask local business and your local library to advertise for you, too. Choose a common meeting spot such as a coffee shop to discuss your first book, or invite other interested parties to come to your house for dinner (this probably works best if you’re not cooking for a crowd!). Talk, laugh, and enjoy learning from one another.

4. Take a class.
You’re never too old to learn something new. Community colleges and technical colleges often publish a course catalog for continuing adult education or let local residents audit their courses for a reduced fee. There’s no better time to learn a new language, take notes on an interesting lecture, or pretend you’re in college again (complete with homework, in some cases!).

No matter what your interests are, remember that lifelong learning is one of the best parts of growing older. Embrace it, stay active, and make the most of your potential by taking advantage of these opportunities in your community and fun activities for seniors.
