Active Seniors Fountain of Youth
Thanks for joining me for my second attempt at writing a column. I will try to make it interesting for you.
I got up this morning and went to my gym. It is my “anniversary” date, so to speak, I joined the gym l8 years ago, how time does fly! It was the luckiest day of my life when I walked through those doors. It was called “Spa Lady” in those days, being bought out by the present owners, “Just Ladies”. After “getting my feet wet” with the treadmill, rowing machine, etc., I attend the class lessons called “Group Power”, which consist of barbell exercises set to music. There is a new programme presented every six weeks or so, to keep things fresh and challenging. Bear in mind, I had never exercised until the age of 60, so it is never too late!! I attend the gym three or four times a week, in summer I play golf on Thursdays with the Ladies Club at Mylora Golf Club located in Richmond, Canada. That is worth another column in itself!
I love the gym, the members and staff made me feel so welcome. I am sure I am among the oldest members, but never felt “odd” or uncomfortable with my struggles, and never felt anything but welcome and encouraged. I have made some good friends at the gym, we go for coffee on Tuesdays, and have a luncheon for any special occasions, like a birthday for instance, or Christmas, or any excuse. My gym friends are mainly much younger than I, but a varied selection of occupations, from nurses, flight attendants, cruise officers, etc. make for interesting conversation. I am eternally grateful for my son for steering me away from the “co-sexes” gyms, which for convenience sake were closer. He said I would hate it; it was just a glorified dating-game, with the little girls in their skimpy costumes, and the men showing off their muscles. My gym has no such object, we don’t care what we look like, and have as our only goal our health and well-being. The gym has something for everyone, spinning, yoga, fitness classes, or if you wish, just work on the machines on your own. The choice is yours. I joined Weight Watchers (enough fodder for another column indeed) and I am both happy and successful with my fitness routine and weight loss. Thank you for letting me join you. Remember, above all “Be Happy!” June
