Seniors study Egypt’s 5,000 years of history
Ancient pyramids and magnificent temples provide seniors with the opportunity of studying Egypt’s 5,000 years of history. Said to be the origin of civilization, Egypt offers an insight into our ancient world heritage and provides unlimited educational potential for the interested elderly traveler or senior travel group.
Visiting all of the 100+ Egyptian pyramids in this North African country in just a few weeks is next to impossible but if the elderly travel person plans their experience in advance taking into consideration geography, historic relevance, personal interests and ease of access they will not be disappointed.
Ancient Pyramids are grouped together in a number of fields.
Supposedly those pharaohs with enough wealth had these burial monuments constructed along the west bank of the Nile, to enable their soul and their consorts to follow the gigantic stairway to the home of their gods. The most northern location is the site of the “Great Pyramid” which was listed during Hellenistic times as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is the only wonder that still exists today and is located at Giza near Cairo. Known as the Giza Necropolis this group of antiquities is very popular with elderly travel groups. Further south is Abu Sir which boasts fourteen pyramids and was the main royal necropolis during the Fifth Dynasty and is said to be constructed with inferior limestone. Further south the Dashur field has only been made accessible to the public since 1996 and is probably the next most important location after Giza and Abu Sir. Elderly travelers learn about ancient temples. When we think of Egypt we usually do not think of temples but the world’s largest religious structure, The Temple of Karnak is located here. Not only were the Temples of Egypt considered to be places of worship they were believed to be the homes of the gods. Kings were also thought to be gods and after their death temples or Mansions were built in their honour. Senior citizen travel includes tours to many of the pyramids and temples where they learn about the historic development of these structures, what they symbolize and how our world today was influenced by these ancient civilizations. These tours can be self-guided for the single senior travel person or with a guide leading a group of elderly travelers providing interesting details to the observers. Arabic Language Studying Arabic is possible at many of the language schools available in the major cities including Cairo. They have programs for every level of experience from the beginner to someone who requires the knowledge for academic studies. Fun things to do For the more adventuresome senior traveler who wishes to add some extra circular activities to their trip there are opportunities for scuba diving, golf or bird watching. Egypt itself is fairly inexpensive but the entrance fees to museums, temples, etc. can add up extensively. However, for seniors who want a little more than just a vacation this is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to study Egypt’s 5,000 years of history.
